We added Pilates with Shieri Shelly Yamafuji to our regular class schedule in January 2022, and the classes have benefited so many in our community as a complement to our yoga offerings. Pilates supports a deeper awareness of the core, helping cultivate greater stability, strength, and alignment both on and off the mat. It has been especially beneficial for those navigating back pain, recovering from injury, or seeking to build a stronger foundation for their yoga practice.

Shieri's mindful, therapeutic approach to mat Pilates is unique and deeply appreciated. Our hope is that this training will empower more teachers with the skills, confidence, and Pilates Mat certification needed to share this approach and offer exceptional Pilates classes.

Mindful Pilates Comprehensive Mat Teacher Training with Shieri

3 Weekends | October 3–4, 10–11, & 24–25

This 35-hour Comprehensive Mindful Pilates Mat Teacher Training offers a thorough and immersive education designed for yoga teachers, movement professionals, fitness instructors, healthcare practitioners, and dedicated students who want to deepen their understanding of movement while developing the confidence and skills to teach Pilates safely and effectively.

The program begins with an introduction to Pilates, covering its principles, benefits, and essential anatomy and kinesiology, including the respiratory system. You'll learn more than 30 foundational mat exercises through a precise, therapeutic, and mindful approach while developing the observation and teaching skills needed to adapt the work for a variety of bodies and abilities.

Special guest lectures from a physical therapist and a 900-hour Pilates Reformer instructor provide valuable insight into common injuries, movement patterns, and special populations, offering a deeper understanding of the body in motion.

This program was designed to answer the questions I wished I had when I first began teaching—a curriculum that is complete and self-sufficient, allowing you to confidently teach Pilates Mat without needing to learn the Pilates equipment, while still providing everything you need to create safe, effective, and intelligent classes.

Rather than focusing on memorizing choreography, this training emphasizes understanding why each movement matters. You'll learn how to observe bodies, recognize common movement patterns, modify exercises for different needs, and guide students with clarity, purpose, and confidence.

Throughout the training, you'll explore:

  • Pilates principles and mindful movement

  • Functional anatomy and biomechanics

  • Core integration and whole-body connection

  • Safe alignment and injury prevention

  • Modifications, progressions, and therapeutic applications

  • Teaching methodology and class sequencing

  • Observation skills and effective cueing

  • Breath, body awareness, and nervous system regulation

This training is ideal for:

  • Yoga teachers looking to expand their teaching toolbox

  • Fitness professionals seeking a more therapeutic and sustainable approach

  • Pilates instructors wanting a deeper understanding of movement

  • Healthcare and wellness professionals

  • Dedicated students passionate about learning movement in greater depth

By the end of the program, you'll not only understand Pilates—you'll know how to teach it in a way that helps people move with greater awareness, strength, resilience, and ease. Whether your goal is to become a Pilates instructor or simply deepen your understanding of movement, this training provides practical tools that will support both your personal practice and professional growth.
